Science Alert!

We all know how amazing dogs are, or else you wouldn't be here! But do you really know how amazing their noses are??

It has been shown that puppies start scenting before they are even born. How incredible is that!?

Humans have about 6 million olfactory receptors. In comparison, dogs have an estimated 220 million!

Scientists have found that "a dog could detect a teaspoon of sugar in a million gallons of water, or two Olympic-sized pools worth. Another dog scientist likened their ability to catching a whiff of one rotten apple in two million barrels."

The reason dogs have those funny slits in their noses, is because that's where the dog exhales from. This means, instead of pushing the air back out through the nostrils, and therefore pushing out the scent, dogs are able to continually draw scent in through their nostrils. So no scent is lost through exhaled air.

Amazing!
